It used to be super affordable, before the culture vultures started moving into the East Village, Greenwich Village, SoHo, Tribeca, Riverside, Redhook, and now Harlem to get the “authentic” NYC experience. And these slum lords were too happy to oblige them. Also, that’s an efficiency in the video. A studio is what I had on 110th St/Cathedral Pkwy, the rd that was the boundary line between the Upper East Side and Harlem. My studio back in 1994 was $600 month for a room just big enough for a full size bed, a mini fridge, a makeshift desk, an office chair I found in the trash, and a makeshift bookcase that used to be a wine rack I found also in Upper East Side garbage; also the 3 tribes of cockroaches. I had to share a kitchen and a cramped roach infested bathroom with several other rooms in my section of the building. But at least I had a great view of an alleyway, and Central Park if I climbed onto the fire escape.

Congrats on your house. After 45 years I finally left NYC. My only regret is not doing it sooner. One day taking my six month old for a walk in his stroller on the Upper East side a ray of realization from the sky hit me in the head. It imbued me with the thought, "this is the worst place to raise my child."

Never once had an issue like this on the NYC subway. Had some delays, but nothing I couldn’t handle

I remember having a disagreement with a guidebook author who was also a New Yorker. I pointed out how difficult it was to use the subway. She vehemently disagreed. Yet it worked just fine under Giuliani.
